Halling’s Close Encounter with Leeds Castle, Sunday 9th August 2009

It was a quiet, sunny summers evening on Sunday 9th August, a lot of families away on holiday and some in their gardens enjoying the remains of their Barbecues. Around 7:30pm the peace was shattered with a mighty roar from the sky! With the roar there appeared a very large object, but very identifiable; a hot air balloon. The balloon was soaring high in the sky and “Leeds Castle” was clearly marked on it.

This particular evening was going to be Halling’s close encounter with Leeds Castle.

Suddenly the balloon descended rapidly and could be seen just above the rooftops around the Low Meadow area. Then it descended further! You could hear people shouting excitedly about this and many left their homes to catch a better view of the scene.

The Passengers on the balloon were clearly visible and waving furiously, apparently really enjoying their flight as well as their close encounter with Halling and some of its Residents! What a great evening to be experiencing such an exciting adventure!

As always all good things must come to an end and for the Passengers of the Hot Air Balloon they ended their flight not too far from the houses they had just visited landing behind the Cemex Ready-mix works just off Formby Road. It must have been a very exciting landing as the Pilot managed to avoid the Buildings and also the High Power lines which run across the Marsh.

Life quickly settled back to normal apart from the Emergency Services which had been called by some enthusiastic member of the Public with the best interests of the Balloon’s Occupants at heart!
